These Pac Man Toilet Roll Covers are always very popular whether I have them at Fairs or in the Etsy shop. I mean, I can see why, there are so blooming cute when stacked up together!

They are a real blast from the past with their retro gamer appeal. In fact two retro items from our childhood all rolled into one – Pac Man and loo roll covers!

Well this is variation on those toilet roll dollies – it’s a Pac Man toilet roll cover to hide away that spare loo roll. Anyway back to the Pac Man Toilet roll covers! I’ve been making them for a while and decided to finally pop the pattern for these in my Etsy Shop too so you can make your own favourite, or indeed all 4 of them!

Sheep everywhere

Quite a while ago I was trying out some new crochet stitches and came across the popcorn stitch. It was actually easier to do and easier to vary than I thought it might be.  I thought it looked really tricky until I tried it! It’s actually quite effective in a number of ways and I’ve used it in lots of makes.

It works quite well as an edging on hats such as my baby Santa hat. I’ve also made it to create a Christmas snowball tea cosy. The pink hat is one that I made for my little girl. I mixed popcorn stitches in with various others to give a textured look to the hat.

One of the things I do like to use it for is making woolly sheep!

I’m starting to collect quite a flock of them now. I’ve got tea cosies, mug cosies and toilet roll covers. They just look so cute!

I’m trying to decide what sort of sheep to make next. Any suggestions?

It’s all change this Christmas

I’ve been making things as Quirky Purple for ages and ages now.

I am always trying out new things based on an idea that’s popped in my head 🙂 I like to try and make up a new pattern and see if I can actually make it look like the image I had in my head. This means that the list of things I make has got bigger and bigger. The upshot of this is that at busy times, like Christmas, I struggle to keep on top of things.

Union Jack tablet coverI’ve been meaning to review my makes and see if I can just reduce it a bit to make it a little bit more manageable. I might manage to get my Christmas prep and Christmas shopping done too :)

Anyway, my ‘issue’ is being pushed a little more strongly now. I’m about to start a course, so I know I won’t have as much time as usual to crack on with Christmas orders. Yep, I’ve had to bite the bullet!

In my Etsy Shop, I’ve created a section called Pre-Christmas Sale. I’ve popped lots of goodies in there at some pretty good discounts. These are all available for immediate worldwide shipping as I have them all made up and ready to ship. These are items that I won’t be making anymore as I just won’t have the time 😦  Over the next couple of weeks I will be adding in a few more items – if I can bear it!

Quirky Christmas toilet roll holders

Now that Halloween is finished, I think I can start to talk about Christmas…

I make a lot of quirky crochet items, but there’s one thing that I really enjoy doing – that’s the toilet roll dolls and toilet roll holders. I really enjoy the challenge of coming up with ways to crochet things based around the bog standard toilet roll.

It’s a Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer toilet roll cover. Oh course, you could see that already!

So, he’s the first of my Christmas toilet roll covers. I think he will look fantastic hiding away that spare toilet roll over the Christmas period. He’ll add a little bit of quirky Christmas cheer to the smallest room in the house 🙂

I’m guessing a Santa toilet roll cover and a snowman toilet roll cover will be next on my Christmas crochet list 🙂

Unicorns and rainbows

The little girls still loves the Minions (and her hat) but she’s also started to fall in love with unicorns and My Little Pony. She kind of gets them all mixed up and also sometimes refers to them as Ubercorns – like the Go Jetters. Yes, she also loves the Go Jetters and we have to dance to the theme music whenever it comes on the telly.

Anyway, I thought I’d have a go at making some sort of unicorn and see what it turned out like.

I quite like making my quirky and geeky little toilet roll covers so I thought I’d start there first. I also had some nice DK Smoothie yarn that looked like it might make a nice rainbow effect.

It’s only part way through at the moment. I’ve tried some slightly different ‘cute’ eyes and used some Kam snaps to finish them off (the pupils). I think I need to move the golden horn down a little bit and I’m currently crocheting some multicoloured spirals for his mane.

It’s starting to come along though.

I’m trying to keep it out of the way of my little girl for the moment in case she tries to cram it on her head!

Minions everywhere!

p1030929I made this minion toilet roll cover a little while ago.

Now, my little girl has recently started to love the minions. She spotted the toilet roll cover when I looking through my things for another toilet roll cover that I’d had an order for. She was convinced it was a hat. Obviously too small for her to wear as a hat 🙂 I tried to explain with was to put on a toilet roll, but she wasn’t convinced by my explanation….

Anyway, she kept asking about the ‘minions hat’ so I thought I’d better have a look at making one for her.

This weekend I finally got around to it. She was pretty interested in the process and could tell it was going to be a minion even before I’d finished the basic part of the hat.

I managed to get it finished in time for her to wear it to see the lights switched on in our town centre, in Penarth.

What do you think of the finished hat?

She loved it – not the ride though – she screamed to get off after it had been round 3 times. They had to stop the ride for her… Hey, ho, that’s pre-schoolers for you 🙂

I’m Stickman, I’m Stickman, I’m Stickman, that’s me!

Earlier this year Stickman was one of my little girl’s favourite books.

One evening I was reading it to her and was looking at the character and thought it might lend itself to a crochet creation 🙂

Anyway, I gave it a go an came up with this little fella:

To be honest I was so busy making orders at the time that I didn’t have any chance to make write up my pattern properly and make anymore of the little guy. But a couple of months ago I did actually get around to it and make another one for a friend’s little girl as a ‘big sister’ present.

Dr Who must be back on the telly!

I haven’t watched the new Dr Who yet, but I can tell it’s back on the telly. My orders for my Dr Who series have started to ramp up!

At the moment I make a hot water bottle cosy (with the hot water bottle), a mobile phone cosy and a kindle/tablet cover. All crocheted. I like making them, but they are probably one of the fiddliest items that I make – there are lots of separate bits and pieces that need adding on plus some lettering. These and the zombies things probably take the most concentration but look pretty cool when finished 🙂

I’ve been toying with the idea of making a toilet roll cover too. I think it could work quite nicely. Once I’ve finished my current orders I think I’ll give it a go.

Anything else that you’d like to see me make in the TARDIS style?

Starting Christmas early

I usually get very busy towards Christmas with loads of custom orders coming from my online shop. So, I decided to make a start on some things for my house a bit earlier this year – last year I was too busy to get anything done!

So far I’ve made some nice Christmas bunting. I’ve done some felt applique letters on it.

Applique isn’t something I do very often so it seemed to take me ages to do.

I’m also going to make an advent calendar with some of the same material and some nice contrasting fabric.

Crochet nativity sceneI’m also working on a crocheted nativity scene.

I saw a knitted one last year and knew that I’d have to make one this year.

This piccie shows the progress a few days ago, but since then I’ve also finished Joseph.

I’m going to put the nativity characters in the advent calender, with a few tree decorations too – and of course a few chocolate coins 🙂

I also bought some lovely gingerbread man fabric and I’m just deciding what to make with that. Maybe a little dress for my little girl? Oh and I still need to crochet some Christmas stockings to go above the fireplace 🙂

 

Toddler dress sewing project

A little while ago I decided to put my sewing machine to good use and make some nice clothes for my little girl.

I had a good look around and found some really cool material at Tiny Vikings. Do check them out as they have some fantastic fabrics and their customer service is excellent! I could have bought up half the shop when I was looking 🙂

Izzie's dressAnyway I bought some jersey as I quite like the comfort and ease of the clothes she already has in jersey. What I didn’t realise was that it’s not the easiest to sew with… anyway after a little Google I discovered I was using the wrong needle on my machine for stretchy fabric.

Later when I told my mum I was using jersey, she told me straight away where I was going wrong – my mum used to make a lot of our clothes in the 70s…

This is where I’m terrible – as usual I didn’t have a pattern… So, I grabbed one of Izzie’s dresses that I liked the shape of and drew around it on paper and then added a seam allowance all the way around. I sewed it all in a matching cotton.

Izzie's dress and bibThe neck was a bit trickier as I’d decided to make my own bit of bias binding from a plain red jersey and then attach it around the neck. I tacked it all into place and machine sewed it in place.

As Izzie has been teething again recently I also made a matching bib. This has a lovely red jersey on the reverse side, which I also bought from Tiny Vikings. I used poppers for this. I make quite a few bibs for my Etsy online shop so this one was a doddle 🙂

Sing_and_Sign_End_of_term_Jul15This is a picture of Izzie wearing the dress with some pink leggings. It works well with or without leggings. It also works well with long sleeves underneath.

That’s us on the right hand side of the picture. This is our end of term picture at Izzie’s favourite class – Sing and Sign.

I’ve got some rainbow and some kangaroo material left so I think I’ll be making a couple more of these. They will be perfect for autumn 🙂
